WORLD PEACE FORUM- www.worldpeaceforumbc.ca
‘The War To End All Wars: 90 years later and the lessons learned – A Teach-in’
November 8 – 11, 2008 The Victory of Remembering Over Forgetting
This year there will be much hoopla in the service of new wars - the same as every year, just a little more so. The World Peace Forum wants to use the anniversary to create an event that tells the story about what wars are really about- plunder and a new division of colonial spoils and the repression of the movement for social change in the interests of the rich and powerful. Sound familiar? What is not familiar is that many of the issues we are dealing with today have their roots in what happened between August of 1914 and November of 1918 and the aftermath. Less familiar is that there was mass opposition to that war as there is to new wars; that some of the best thinkers, artists and millions of ‘ordinary’ folk made extraordinary effort to prevent the war, to oppose it and to try and build a new world after it where war would be as much a part of the distant past as the dinosaurs. They failed but serve to inspire us in our campaign to end war and to build a world based on economic and social justice. Remembering them is not just an exercise in historical revisionism but an indispensable component of building a new and powerful movement against war.
The event would take place over the weekend of November 8 & 9 and culminate on Tuesday, November 11. To accomplish it, the World Peace Forum is sending out a call to activists, artists and academics from Vancouver and beyond to bring their work, knowledge skill and energy to the project. To pay for it, we will be approaching foundations, unions and individuals. With six months lead time; we think it is possible to put together something pretty impressive and useful. The event will take place a few days after the US elections and this will be an excellent time to take stock of the political direction of the new regime and the tasks of the peace movement over the next period. Help us! Send us your ideas. We are calling for submissions from organizations and individuals. They should be submitted as proposals of no more than two pages - that is, no longer than this letter. They can be specific or general - a speech, a show or something no-one ever thought of before. We are looking for the maximum of creative thinking. Money will be limited so dream within fiscal realism, at this point we want ideas- the more the merrier. The World Peace Forum Society brought together several thousand dreamers and doers from around the world two years ago to Vancouver. This affair will be more modest but equally important in moving forward our work of supporting the struggle for peace, social justice and sustainability.
There is no deadline for proposals but, like dinner, it is first come, first served. The initial discussion of proposals and a draft schedule will take place in late June. Consider July 15 is a good date to send us proposals .
